Summary in plain english (Without legal value)
What is it?
This decree-law changes the subjects and final national exams for scientific-humanistic courses in secondary education.
Secondary education corresponds to the 10th, 11th and 12th grades. Students who want to go into higher education can attend the following scientific-humanistic courses:
- science and technology
- socio-economic sciences
- languages and humanities
- visual arts.
What will change?
The 12th grade subject 'Project Area' no longer exists
From the next school year, the subject Project Area will no longer exist.
The goal is for students to apply practical project methods on all subjects, not just on this particular one.
Discontinuing this subject will also reduce the students’ weekly classroom hours, allowing them to focus on preparing for national exams.
Students can take a Philosophy national exam
Students who entered the 10th grade in the school year 2010/2011 may, by the end of 11th grade, opt to take the Philosophy exam (this subject is common to all courses in 10th and 11th grade) instead of one of the specific biennial subjects (10th and 11th grade subjects that change from course to course).
The goal is to reinforce the importance of common subjects, without increasing the number of exams needed to finish secondary education (four).
A new 10th grade subject
From the next school year, 10th grade students will have a weekly 45-minute class of Civic Education. This new subject will reinforce their education on citizenship, health and sexuality.
What are its benefits?
This decree-law is intended to:
- reduce students' schedule in the final year of high school
- give students more options for their final exams
- strengthen civic education.
When does it come into effect?
This decree-law comes into effect five days after being published.
