What is it?
This decree-law introduces some alterations in the nursing career and in the special nursing career, as well as in the requirements for the access to the categories of the new career structure adopted.
What is going to change?
The nursing career structures now comprise three categories, among which the specialist nurse and the manager nurse.
Besides the ones corresponding to the category of nurse, the specialist nurse develops specific skills of their area of expertise, namely:
- identify the health needs of the individual, family, group or community;
- provide specialized and complex nursing care;
- be responsible for the nursing area in the multi-professional teams.
In the category of manager nurse, the planning, organization, direction and assessment of health care functions are included.
The employees who hold subsistent categories of head nurse and supervisor nurse are automatically transferred to this new category, regarding the experience and skills held and hereby recognized.
For the category of nurse, only the final professional license as nurse is necessary.
For the category of specialist nurse, at least four years of professional experience and the title of specialist nurse are necessary for the filling of the correspondent job position.
For the category of manager nurse, at least three years of professional experience in the field of expertise corresponding to the service or unit of the job position to be occupied are necessary and the nurse should, preferably, be qualified in services management.
What advantages does it bring?
This decree-law allows the recognition of the skills held by the nurses, therefore proceeding to the update and modernization of the two careers therein, adapting them to the current framework, which contributed for an improvement of the healthcare’s quality.
When does it enter into force?
This decree-law enters into force five days following its publication.
