What is it?

This decree-law establishes the maximum number of Armed Forces’ soldiers for 2020.

What is going to change?

The maximum number of soldiers which the Armed Forces may have in 2020 is established on the following situations:

    • soldiers of the operational Permanent Staff;
    • soldiers of the Permanent Staff in reserve who continue to provide services;
    • soldiers of the Permanent Staff in reserve who are not operational;
    • soldiers on a contract/volunteering regime;
    • soldiers and military students training to be part of the Permanent Staff.

1. Maximum number of soldiers of the operational Permanent Staff:

    • in the Armed Forces: 15530
    • in the Major General of the Armed Forces: 1721
    • outside the Armed Forces: 853

2. Maximum number of soldiers of the Permanent Staff in reserve who continue to provide services:

    • in the Armed Forces: 440
    • in the Major General of the Armed Forces: 55
    • outside the Armed Forces: 269

3. Maximum number of soldiers of the Permanent Staff in reserve who are not operational: 2476

4. Maximum number of soldiers on a contract/volunteering regime:

    • in the Armed Forces: 13445
    • in the Major General of the Armed Forces: 427

5. Maximum number of soldiers and military students training to be part of the Permanent Staff: 1141

What advantages does it bring?

This decree-law aims to adapt the number of soldiers to the needs and activities envisaged for 2020.

When does it enter into force?

This decree-law enters into force on 14 February 2020.
