Summary in plain english

What is it?

This decree-law amends the scheme applicable to the collection, treatment and discharge of urban waste water in the aquatic environment.

What is going to change?

In view of the need to carry out a new revision of the sensitive areas in force, and taking into account the objectives set out by the Government in its Programme, this decree-law refers the identification of sensitive areas and less sensitive areas, and their respective revision, to an administrative decree.

The identification of sensitive areas and less sensitive areas is revised at least every four years, through a proposal from the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA).

If the revision results in the need to comply with new requirements, an adaptation period of seven years is granted for this purpose.

Geographic information on the identification of sensitive and less sensitive areas is made available for consultation on the APA's website, through the geographic information system SNIAmb - National Environmental Information System.

What advantages does it bring?

This decree-law aims to achieve better quality legislation in accordance with a policy of legislative restraint and stability, and simplification of procedures.

When does it enter into force?

This decree-law enters into force on the day following its publication.
