What is it?

This decree-law determines the ownership of television and multimedia broadcasting rights, and other audiovisual content, regarding male football championships in the First and Second Leagues and establishes rules regarding its commercialization.

This decree-law applies to sports events related to the First and Second League male football championships, from the minute before the start of each sports event until the minute after its conclusion, including live and deferred broadcasting rights, in full or summarized, and its exploitation in national and international markets.

What is going to change?

This decree-law aims to ensure that by 2028, the date on which the last contracts concluded for the rights now in question expire, the model for centralised marketing of television and multimedia broadcasting rights of the content associated to football matches of the First and Second Leagues is fully implemented in Portugal.

This decree-law determines, for this purpose, that it is impossible for sports companies participating in the First and Second Leagues to commercialise individually the rights of the respective matches for the 2028/2029 seasons and subsequent seasons.

What advantages does it bring?

This decree-law aims to place Portugal on a par with European trends, with the main objectives of making Portuguese professional competitions more balanced, sustainable and competitive.

When does it enter into force?

This decree-law enters into force on 23 March 2020.
