What is going to change?

The maximum number of soldiers which the Armed Forces may have in 2021 is established on the following situations:

    • Soldiers of the operational Permanent Staff;
    • Soldiers of the Permanent Staff in reserve who continue to provide services;
    • Soldiers of the Permanent Staff in reserve who are not operational;
    • Soldiers on a contract/volunteering regime;
    • Soldiers and military students training to be part of the Permanent Staff.

Maximum number of soldiers of the operational Permanent Staff:

    • in the Major General of the Armed Forces: 1736
    • outside the Armed Forces: 874

Maximum number of soldiers of the Permanent Staff in reserve who continue to provide services:

    • in the Armed Forces: 430
    • in the Major General of the Armed Forces: 65
    • outside the Armed Forces: 279

Maximum number of soldiers of the Permanent Staff in reserve who are not operational: 2453.

Maximum number of soldiers on a contract/volunteering regime:

    • In the Armed Forces: 13465.
    • in the Major General of the Armed Forces: 427.

Maximum number of soldiers and military students training to be part of the Permanent Staff: 1274.

What advantages does it bring?

This decree-law aims to adapt the number of soldiers to the needs and activities envisaged for 2021.

When does it enter into force?

This decree-law enters into force on 1 January 2021.
