Summary in plain english

What is it?

This decree-law changes the legal protection scheme to which Olympic symbols are subject and reinforces the mechanisms to combat any form of their illicit use.

What is going to change?

This decree-law recognizes to the Portuguese Paralympic Committee the exclusive right to the use of Paralympic and equivalent properties (e.g. symbols), in the scope of the dignification of the sports movement for people with disabilities.

This decree-law also guarantees respect for industrial property rights and trade secrets, provided for in the Industrial Property Code, in relation to Olympic and Paralympic symbols and equivalent.

Industrial property - defines all patents, trademarks and designs covered by exclusive rights of use, production and marketing.

What advantages does it bring?

This decree-law promotes the practice of sport as an activity of personal fulfilment and healthy living.

The Portuguese Paralympic Committee, as a representative entity of the Paralympic movement of the country, ensures the participation of people with disabilities in the Paralympic Games.

When does it enter into force?

This decree-law enters into force on 13 December 2019.
