This decree-law ensures the execution and compliance with the European rules regarding the animal protection on the slaughter of species bred for the production of food, skins and other products, and for depopulation purposes.What is going to change?
The General-Directorate of Nutrition and Veterinary (DGAV), as the national animal health authority, is responsible for managing, coordinating and controlling the actions to develop for the execution of the Regulation and of this decree-law.
The companies’ operators must allow the access to their premises and provide all documentation requested by DGAV, at the moment of inspection.
Whenever the operator of a slaughterhouse does not comply with the rules, jeopardizing the animals’ welfare, the director general of Nutrition and Veterinary determines adequate administrative measures.Responsible individual for the animal welfare
There shall be an individual responsible for the animal welfare in each slaughterhouse, with adequate qualifications and training.
The staff involves in slaughter and related operations must be trained on the minimum animal welfare standards during the slaughter.DGAV inspects the compliance with the rules
Fines are established to punish the non-compliance with the established rules.
The fines’ proceedings are distributed through the entity which carried out the act (10%), DGAV (30%) and the State (60%).What advantages does it bring?
This decree-law reinforces the animal protection measures during the slaughter and contributes for the improvement of the meat’s quality, as well as of the slaughterhouses employees’ safety.When does it enter into force?
This decree-law enters into force on the day following its publication.
